The Netherlands Vaccine Institute (NVI) in Bilthoven reflects
more than 100 years of extensive knowledge and experience gained
through research and production of vaccines. The NVI is an agency
responsible to the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. It
guarantees the supply of vaccines necessary to protect the Dutch
population against infectious diseases. The vaccines are used both
in the regular National Immunisation Programmes and for emergency
vaccination campaigns.
The public tasks of the NVI have been transferred to the
National Institute for Public Health and the Environment
(Rijksinstituut voor volksgezondheid en milieu, RIVM). This
concerns the following core tasks:
- Procurement, storage and distribution of vaccines for the National Immunisation Programme (Rijksvaccinatieprogramma, RVP), the National Influenza Prevention Programme (Nationaal Programma Grieppreventie, NPG) and the other national provisions such as pandemic preparedness, and the National Serum Depot (NSD).
- Research and development of vaccines.
Production of vaccines to a private party
The third task of the NVI, the government-controlled production of vaccines, will terminate in due course. The production services and facilities of the NVI are currently being offered for sale to private parties. As soon as the sale is completed we shall notify those customers affected.
